Role of Drug Eluting Balloons in Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects millions of people worldwide and is characterized by reduced blood flow to the limbs. Drug eluting balloons have become a valuable treatment option for PAD, particularly in complex or long lesions.

In PAD treatment, maintaining vessel patency is critical to preventing symptoms such as pain, ulcers, and limb loss. Drug eluting balloons reduce the likelihood of repeat interventions by limiting restenosis. Their ability to treat long and tortuous vessels without leaving a stent behind is especially beneficial in peripheral arteries.

DEBs also preserve the natural flexibility of the artery, which is important in areas subject to movement, such as the legs. This advantage contributes to better functional outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.
